On May 24, 2007 Facebook Launched It's Platform...Where Are We Now?

. Thursday, November 8, 2007

Late in May of 2007, Facebook launched it's platform so that anyone could create applications for everyone on Facebook to enjoy. People all over the Internet, were stirring with excitement at the new and social applications that would surely appear.

Almost five month laters, we got a lot of apps, 7, 617 to be exact. But why aren't we indulging the in the greatness of the all the facebook apps. The answer is, people aren't really creating USEFUL applications. It seems like people are more interested in creating apps about vampires, pirates, and zombies biting people than making something meaningful.

Well, I shouldn't generalize, there are plenty of cool applications. Below, I've listed the most unique and undiscovered applications on the Facebook platform. Each of these apps have less than 100,000 active users.

We're Related

This app allows people to create family connections between people. You can see your families photos and other posted items on the application main page. It even shows you a list of people on Facebook that might be related to you.

If this app gets a bigger community, it can actually become incredibly useful in the future, especially the further you look down the line. People a hundred years from now will be able to see their ancestors and check out what they did.

This seems pretty cool and useful to me.

Traveler IQ Challenge

This Traveler IQ challenge is brought to you by the Web's Original Travel Blog

This app is one of the better games I've played recently (Games such as; WoW, Halo 3, and Guitar Hero)

What's great about this game is that you actually learn things. On the top part of the screen the game shows you a name of a city, and your supposed to pinpoint it's location.

It's gets harder with each level, and so far people have only been able to get to level 12. This game gets really addictive, and thanks to that, I now know where the Forbidden City is.

The picture above is actually the game, so why don't you try it out?

BirthDay eCards

One of the best features of Facebook is their birthday announcements. People since the beginning of time have always had trouble remembering everyone's birthdays. After Facebook launched this problem seemed to be solved.

But, sometime ago, Facebook made these announcements almost invisible on their home page. But thankfully, Birthday eCards does the job too.

Even better, this app sends you notifications of birthday's coming up, so it will be next to impossible to forget about the birthday's of the people you care about. Oh, and ya, you can also send cool customizable birthday cards to people, signed by all their friends.

Tetris Tournament

I'm not going even try to justify how this app is useful, I think it's pretty obvious.

Basically, you can play tetris against all your friends on Facebook, and try to get the high score.

It get's really addictive, especially if you have friends using this app too.

There are still a couple bugs with this program, but nothing that deters from the main goal of beating your friends in tetris.

Where I've Been

I consider this application really useful. I love to travel, and every year I try to plan a trip to a "undiscovered" country.

This application is a great way to keep track of all the countries I've visited, or more importantly, which countries I haven't visited.

Of course, you can post this map on your profile, so that others can see where you traveled.

A couple more "undiscovered" Facebook apps;

There are some cool and useful applications out there on Facebook, but nothing profound. I don't understand why there aren't hundreds of applications that are actually useful in the real world. It can't be that hard to think of these ideas, I, myself have hundreds of ideas for applications that would be awesome on Facebook.

A few Facebook applications of the future;
  • A Strangers Profile
    • Let strangers see any information, profile pictures, photos, videos, and anything else people feel like sharing with everyone.
  • Driving Records
    • Text in license plates of bad drivers or good drivers you encounter during your day.
    • Let people search their license plate numbers to see if they are "good" drivers
  • Time Capsule / LockBox
    • Let people submit anything they want into a time capsule. Everyday is a beginning of a new time capsule.
    • People can rate the best submissions, so people can easily see what was popular on that day.
  • Music Collaborative
    • Let people write, play, sing, produce songs.
    • People can upload their drumbeats, vocals, guitar riffs, bass lines, piano melodies, etc...
    • The producers can use these to make songs and sell them on Facebook.
    • Everyone involved in the song gets a certain share of the revenue.

If I'm thinking of all these ideas, I'm sure that other people are too, and that's why I'm confused. What aren't people creating useful apps? I don't think we'll ever figure out, but it may have something to do with that fact that most Facebook developers are too young or too inexperienced to manage popular applications.

So lets try this, If you have any great Facebook ideas, and don't have the time to develop them, feel free to suggest them here, so they can actually get made. Let's start making some cool apps.

If you want to use any of these ideas, feel free to use them, I have other applications I am currently developing. But I would suggest contacting me first, because I have more notes on each of these ideas.
